Things can even go wrong with new construction if the compression and tension loads of the building are not adequately considered in the design or construction. If caught early during construction, various reinforcement and repair option exist but steel can create problems with connections, loss of square footage, and appearance.

In this case, the structural steel of a new construction commercial building was deemed inadequate for compression and tension loads.

Material Used: Fortress 4 layers 300 g.s.m. carbon fiber unidirectional tow sheet with Fortress #1276 Epoxy system.
Project Scope:
Reinforcement of new construction commercial building foundation. Structural steel was deemed inadequate for compression and tension loads.



Solution:
Fortress Carbon Fiber was designed to bring bearing capacity to acceptable levels.



Observations:
Origionally, steel was considered; however, problems with connections, loss of square footage, and appearance made carbon fiber a viable option. Tow sheet was designed because of the amount of carbon needed for the expected load. Fortress solved this problem economically and the job was completed in 4 working days.
