Sometimes it is necessary to alter the structural integrity of a concrete structure in order to perform alterations or general repair. In such cases, the structural integrity of the structure must be restored.

In this case, the need to install plumbing required cutting the concrete and reinforcing rebar to accomodate the installation. The removal of rebar weakened the structural integrity of the rebar and needed to be reinforced.

Date: April 14, 2003
Structure: Parking Garage, Birmingham, MI
Contractor: Eagle Construction
Engineer: Testing & Consulting Engineers
Material Used: Fortress Carbon/Kevlar Grid Strap

Project Scope:
Reinforce 12" concrete cieling/floor of parking garage. 4" cores were removed to insert PVC plumbing. Several areas compromised the steel rebar reinforcing by cutting the steel rebar in half when the 4" cores were taken.

Solution:
Carbon grid straps were laminated on positive and negative sides to restore slabs' structural integrity. After substrate profile was achieved, epoxy was placed on strap and lifted into place. A natural vacuum process pulled strap into substrate. Each strap took approximately 15 minutes to apply. An epoxy-based concrete paint can now be used for aesthetics.

Observations:
The FORTRESS Carbon Fiber grid, epoxy matrix, and laminating technique is an effective solution for overhead projects. No mechanical anchors, rollers, or problems due to gravity issues of overhead installtaions, that may be associated with solid plate or wet lay-up techniques. This project shows the benefits of Fortress Stabilization Systems in overall project time and costs versus previous design methods.
